Originally grown in Eastern UP, in the plains of the mighty river this ancient rice was very popular
Then it faced a decline and is being revived now by farmers mainly in Eastern UP
Some seed saver organic farmers are growing it elsewhere too.
It has black husk, the bran is brownish green and the rice is white when bran is removed
Scented with good mouthfeel, the with bran rice is slightly sticky when well cooked, the polished version is slender and of medium length.The organic farmer Ramamoorthy from Mayiladuthurai grew a small batch of this rice and harvested it in 2020 samba.
Aged, dehusked, unpolished it is here in 2022
